The Institute for Energy Technology in Norway has been in the forefront of the internationally acknowledged HyNor Project. Characterized by many aspects, one very interesting feature is the HyNor Lillestrom hydrogen fueling station. What makes this station stand out is that hydrogen production will be based not only on solar powered electrolysis but also the reforming of biogas. In the next stage, the hydrogen will be compressed by means of metal hydrides exploiting renewable thermal energy. In the end, the net energy is neutral and the system is delivering renewable energy to the grid when not used for H2 production.
The station is expected to be operational during 2010 servicing a small fleet of cars with hydrogen.
