Norway,\u00a0for example, is the world leader in\u00a0using battery electric cars and other\u00a0Nordic nations have promoted increased\u00a0use of bio-fuels, hydrogen\u00a0and electricity directly. All of the\u00a0Nordic nations have set forward\u00a0policy goals regarding emission\u00a0reductions from transport and there\u00a0is a good cooperation between industries\u00a0in that field as well as established\u00a0networks.<\/p>\n

This level of cooperation and shared\u00a0policy goals currently does not exist\u00a0for marine applications. Oil consumption\u00a0can be very high. In some cases\u00a0more than \u00bd kilogram of oil is burned\u00a0to catch 1 kilogram of fish! Technical\u00a0developments in land transport have\u00a0occurred in the last few years but\u00a0there are many challenges in\u00a0adopting those developments for\u00a0marine applications and in some\u00a0cases alternative solutions need to be\u00a0found. The Nordic countries have\u00a0taken steps towards increasing the\u00a0use of domestic resources to\u00a0substitute for fossil fuels. Strides\u00a0have been made to increase the use\u00a0of bio-fuels and renewable\u00a0electricity. The marine sector can be\u00a0an ideal platform for utilization of\u00a0such resources but little progress has\u00a0been made.
